Drinking water supply and strengthen citizen participation in New Trinidad urban, Trinidad -Beni

Characteristics of project

Location: Suburb Nueva Trinidad, at two km Northeast from the center of the city  Trinidad-Beni

Local partner: Caritas Beni – Social ministry

Justification: In urban areas with the highest concentration of population sanitary problems due to lack of drinking water supply and sanitation are important. In the city of Trinidad 15 suburbs of the city (extra-radius) do not have any water supply. Faced with this situation neighborhood associations of the suburb Nueva Trinidad got organized in order to demand and get this basic need for drinking water supply in their area covered.

Objectives: Promote improvement of living conditions and health situation of  4.863 families (14.589 persons) of the suburb Nueva Trinidad, in the city of Trinidad (capital of the departament of Beni) by building an infrastructure that ensures drinking water supply for domestic use and to strengthen social cohesion and participation with equal conditions for men and women of the suburb.

  1. Achieve general drinking water supply in the suburb Nueva Trinidad 
  2. Improve sanitary conditions of the population, conditioned by the lack of drinking water. 
  3. Advance in the fulfillment of the goal 10 of the Millenium Objectives to reduce in half the percentage of persons without access to drinking water in the city of Trinidad by the year 2015. 
  4. Create a subvention fond to guarentee domestic connections from the general drinking water network for 195 families in the suburb who live in extreme poverty.  
  5. Consolidate participation, cooperation and coordination among all local agents engaged in the project (beneficiaries, neighborhood associations, townhall, COATRI and Caritas Beni). 
  6. Strengthen space for citizen participation with equal conditions for men and women in the suburb Nueva Trinidad through training programs of citizen participation. 
  7. Educate the beneficiaries of the project about the importance of use and care of drinking water in terms of quality of life and for the environment.

Activities:

  • Preliminary work with sociolization of the project and organization for community participation in the construction projects.
  • Study necessary topographic relevance to proceed with the design of the water networks.
  • Removal of soil, clean levelling and removal of  rubble.
  • Execution of construction work, with digging of ditches, jecución de obra, con cavado de las zanjas, completion of laying pipes and then covering of ditches.
  • Registry as partner in the Water Cooperative of Trinidad (Cooperativa de Aguas de Trinidad COATRI) and progressive work of domestic connections for drinking water in homes.
  • Coordination and follow-up meetings of the project
  • Workshops for citizen participation and use and handling of drinking water.

Beneficiary population: 4.863 families of the suburb Nueva Trinidad (approx. total of 14.589 persons)

Project duration: 12 month

Budget and financing: 107,324.25€  (participates FNMC-Federación Navarra de Municipios y Concejos, Federation Navarra of Municipalities and Counsels)

Achievement:

Drinking water supply for 100%  of the families of the suburb.

Improvement of sanitary conditions of the population

Advancing in the fulfillment of goal 10 of the Millenium Objectives

Creation of a subvention fondo so that even the poorest families in the suburb can have their own water pipe connections in their homes.

Strengthening of citizen participation through neighborhood associations.
